This is a coming-of-age type book set in the North East of the US in the first half of the 20th century following Holden, a sixteen year old student who just got kicked out of his rather prestigious prep school and decides to leave his old life behind him and explore a bit before seeing where fate leads him.
The very directionless young main character who feels like the world is mostly working against him in some way can feel relatable to the more difficult early years of life. The other characters except the younger sister don’t have much depth to them but in a way it kind of makes sense in the context of this book. The written perspective follows the whims of the young main character which personally made it less effective but in some way more real to the situation.
Even though I have read other books that I personally think capture the young life experience better, it was not a bad book.
