This book follows Jules and his two siblings while they grow up and during their adult lives. They lose their parents at a young age and have to deal with the new reality at boarding school while going through their childhoods . At the school Jules meets Alva, a seemingly rather secretive and caring girl who also ends up playing a major role in all of their lives.
I really liked Hard Land by Benedict Wells and I think this book has quite a similar feeling to it. This book in comparison felt a bit more ambitious just in the fact that it covers much more of the characters’ lives while being a similar length, so I felt the jumps were more noticeable in the story. I also felt that I could relate slightly more to the characters in Hard Land than in this book but still I really enjoyed this book. The ending was quite hard hitting but definitely fits the story at large.
